Service Guarantee and Insurance
The furniture removal world is full of terminology relating to Guarantees and Insurance, you need to know exactly where you stand in terms of risk of moving your goods / moving house.
Well here is where we stand.
We like many furniture movers have a Service Guarantee. We stand by the service we provide and act in good faith to follow through with it. We will to cover any damage that is directly caused by our own staff subject to the terms of the Service Guarantee. This is a simple "we break we pay" policy that is given fairly broadly in the industry. What is not known by most consumers of removal services is that this is largely our obligation anyway under the Trade Practices Act. What we do in our Service Guarantee is outline our policy in covering this responsibility so there is no need for our clients to seek legal recourse and what we will cover is clearly understood from the beginning.
What is not covered under these Guarantees is the risk in moving the goods due to circumstances that are not under the control of the furniture removalist. For instance if the vehicle is involved in a collision, flash flooding etc. We of course have our own insurance for this type of risk and because of this many removalists will say that fire and collision insurance is included in the move, but the insurance is in the name of the company and they can only claim under the policy for themselves and any claim made against them. This would mean that you would have to make a claim against the removal company and you would have to prove the value of the goods with receipts and photos and you would more than likely spend many months trying to get the administration processed.
Therefore most of these moving Guarantees and “Free Insurance” claims being made within the moving industry come from a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of insurance and is actually misleading the consumer into a belief that their goods are covered when actually they are not. What this means is that the goods are insured and underwritten by a major insurer when they are sitting in the house but when they enter a higher risk environment of transit they are not fully covered.
The advantage of checking if your own contents insurance will cover the transit and storage of the goods or purchasing the insurance from My Local Mover is that you have your own policy in your own name underwritten by a major insurer when the goods are in a higher risk environment. This means that if for whatever reason a valuable china set is damaged and the fault is not clear you can make a claim directly with the insurer without having to deal with the removalist.
With this in mind our strong recommendation is the following;
1. Check with your contents insurer if your goods are covered for transit and storage if necessary. If not;
2. Read our PDS and Policy Wording and consider taking advantage of our excellent transit insurance.
