Cheap Removalists vs Value for Money

My Local Mover | Thursday, December 15, 2011 | Comments (0)

My Local Mover is a budget mover with a quality focus.  In these hard times people can be forgiven for looking first for a "cheap removalist". However too much focus on "cheap" can lead to a false economy and in the end, higher real cost.  It is important to remember that a cheap removalist will not necessarily provide you with value for money.

Selecting a removalist based on a cheap hourly rate is a bit like fishing. You don't really know what you've hooked until it's move day and by then, it's usually too late to throw them back and change your mind! Often removalists who offer cheap hourly rates will be missing some vital services and ethical standards and in the end may cost more with broken items or hidden fees. When you comparing move costs, make sure your removalist offers:

•     Truck Sizes Suited To Your Move. There is no benefit in booking a 'cheap removalist' who arrives in a small truck that will not fit all of your items. Two or more trips will add to the time your move takes, increasing the total cost of your move.

•     Well Maintained Vehicles. The last thing you want on the day is a truck breakdown. Ensure the removal company regularly maintains their trucks. Make sure their trucks are cleaned regularly, both inside and out. Book a removalist who takes pride in their equipment and trade!

•     GPS Tracking. For your own peace of mind, make sure that your removalist company knows where your items are at all times.

•     Experienced Removalists. Furniture removals are best completed by people who have the skills to do so. People who know how to respect your personal space, respect and care for your belongings and your property, and stack the truck in the way that is safest for your items during the trip. It should be expected that your removalists will arrive in uniform, experienced and professional in their skills, ready to work, and not appear to have been dragged in off the street at the last minute!

•     Written Guarantee. As a minimum, your removalists should be clear and upfront in what guarantees they offer and what you are covered for. Don't rely on trust when you have strangers in your home.

•     Moving Insurance. You should have the option to purchase a professional transit insurance policy to ensure that your goods are covered in case of damage. If your mover is telling you that you don't need insurance, or they don't offer it then they may be providing you with advice that meets their needs and not yours. Similarly, your removalist should also be covered by their own Business Insurance, Public Liability Insurance, and Freight Forwarders Insurance.

There is a stereotype in the moving industry that cheap removalists just buy or hire a truck and hang a removalist sign on the side and bang, they're removalists. The worrysome part of this, is that in some cases, this is true. When you're looking at quote for hourly rate house moves, make sure you book with a removalist who can offer you value for money with appropirate services that meets your needs, instead of just the cheapest hourly rate.
