Darren Lockyer and My Local Mover

Here at My Local Mover we have moved a lot of people and every one of them is special. We have also moved a few celebrities but when Darren Lockyer wanted to move with My Local Mover it caused quite a stir amongst our staff. There were offers to work for free, bribes, pleadings to work on that day. Of course we picked two boys who had been with us the longest and one other very keen young man. Let me say, this was not a promotional move. Sometimes companies will offer services for free to get the endorsement from a celebrity, this was not the case. My Local Mover was referred to Darren and he paid our regular hourly rate. As the boys drove to see him they were a little star-struck and wondered how it would go, but they said as soon as they arrived he put them at ease and was very much a regular nice guy. He helped the boys all day and worked alongside them. The boys had been given very strict instructions not to overwhelm the client and only take a picture with the permission of the client and ask his permission to put it on Facebook. Well they not only came back with a ream of pictures but bags of signed sports gear and smiles from ear to ear.
We have two brothers work for us and there was some tussle who would work on the day. As it happened the older boy James worked on the day and he said to Darren, "You know my brother is a big fan and would have loved to meet you today". Darren went and got a bag of sporting gear and sneakers and asked how he should sign it. Then Tuesday morning the team leader gets a call from Darren to say the boys have left furniture blankets behind. James quickly volunteers to pick the blankets up and takes his brother Peter for the ride, with the chance that his brother may get the glimpse. Of course Peter did get to meet Darren and shake his hand. What a big thrill for the boys. Next time something is left on a job I wonder if James will be so keen to volunteer on his day off?
Originally for us, Darren was a client that needed to be looked after as all clients are. From a management perspective the only change from a regular client was to try and make sure that we sent boys that would appreciate the need for respect. I thought it would be just like other celebrities we have moved, the next day we are back to work. But Darren really impacted us all with his attitude. His treatment of our boys just blew us all away, his kindness and humility was really remarkable given the fact that he must get virtually worshipped by young boys all the time and it must be challenging. Pardon the pun but we have all been moved by Darren Lockyer this week.
